July 28th, 2015 – The Urban School Food Alliance, comprised of professionals from the nation’s six largest school districts, is petitioning the federal government for an increase in per-meal funding by the USDA (to bring public-school meal funding more in line with private-school meal funding) and more freedom as to how those meals are packaged and served. Interestingly, one of the big ideas cited in the article involves offering meals as bagged options that can then be taken off-campus, or offered free to every student as a blanket option. The brown-bag option is an intriguing idea.
