July 22nd, 2015 – Roughly 400,000 children receive free/reduced lunch while school is in session, while roughly 200,000 children receive free/reduced breakfast. The same number aren’t receiving free/reduced nutrition during the summer months, despite needing the benefit of breakfast and lunch just as frequently. Part of this is down to transportation (buses don’t run with the same frequency or cover the same area during the summer), but there are several potential causes.
